About the indicator

The share of the population whose consumption falls below $3.65 a day at 2017 purchasing power parity. The World Bank keeps three international lines because one does not work for the whole world: extreme poverty at $2.15 has all but disappeared in middle-income countries, and they need a higher line. This one matches the typical national lines of lower-middle-income countries — that is, it answers how many are poor by the standards of countries like them, not how many are destitute.

Important: Measured from consumption or income in household surveys held once every few years, so the years are discontinuous. The line is set in 2017 PPP dollars, not in current ones.
