About the indicator

The Gini index measures how far the distribution of income (or consumption) in a country departs from a perfectly even one. A value of 0 would mean everyone receives the same, 100 that all income goes to one person. Values below 30 are typical of Northern and Central Europe, values above 50 of a number of countries in Latin America and Southern Africa.

Important: There are no aggregates for country groups, and this is not a gap: the inequality of a group does not follow from country-level Gini values — it requires the income distribution of all its residents at once. The data rest on household surveys, are not available for every year, and the base may be either income or consumption.
