About the indicator

The official exchange rate of the national currency against the US dollar, annual average. It is defined as the rate set by the authorities or the one prevailing in the legally sanctioned exchange market. The quotation is direct: a rising value means the national currency is weakening. For countries with several exchange rates the predominant one is used.

Important: There are no aggregates for country groups: the quantities are expressed in different currencies, and averaging them across countries is meaningless. After monetary reforms and redenominations the series changes scale abruptly, and it is comparable only within homogeneous periods.
