About the indicator

Internal renewable water resources: the volume of water generated inside a country over a year from precipitation — river runoff and groundwater recharge — excluding inflow from neighboring countries. The word “internal” is the key one here: by this measure Egypt is almost empty, although the Nile brings it water in abundance, and it is exactly that gap that makes the country dependent on decisions upstream.

Important: Own resources only. Inflow from abroad is not counted, so for countries in the lower reaches of large rivers the indicator is far below the water actually available.
