About the indicator

Carbon dioxide emissions from land-use change: deforestation, peatland drainage, conversion of land to agriculture — net of absorption by growing forests. This is the only series in the section where values can be negative: a country whose forest cover is expanding absorbs more than it releases. For several countries with active logging this item is comparable to all other emissions combined.

Important: Negative values mean absorption. The estimates here are the most uncertain in all of carbon statistics: they are built from satellite data on forest cover and from models of soil carbon stocks.
