About the indicator

Emissions of all greenhouse gases per person, converted into CO2 equivalent. It differs from CO2 emissions per capita in that it counts methane and nitrous oxide, and that changes the picture: countries with large livestock herds and little industry rise considerably higher in this ranking than they do on carbon dioxide alone. The per capita indicator is the one usually used when the fairness of sharing the reduction effort is discussed.

Important: The aggregate for a group is all of its emissions divided by all of its population. All greenhouse gases are counted in CO2 equivalent using 100-year warming potentials.
