About the indicator

A country's share of global carbon dioxide emissions for the year. The indicator answers the question of current responsibility and differs noticeably from the share of cumulative emissions: countries that industrialized late stand higher on current emissions than on historical ones, and the other way around. That divergence is the main subject of the dispute over the fair sharing of the effort.

Important: Shares add up, so the sum over a group of countries is its weight in global emissions, and “the world” should come to one hundred percent.
