About the indicator

Annual production-based CO2 emissions per resident. Unlike absolute emissions, this indicator removes the effect of country size, which is why it is used in debates about the fair allocation of climate responsibility: the countries with the largest total emissions are not always the leaders per person.

Important: The aggregate for a group is all of its emissions divided by all of its population. That is why the world value is lower than the rich countries would suggest: the denominator is the entire population of the Earth.
