About the indicator

The share of electricity from renewable sources other than hydroelectric plants: solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and tidal. Hydro is set apart deliberately — it was developed long ago and is nearly exhausted, while the growth of renewable generation over the past twenty years came precisely from solar and wind. This series therefore reads as a measure of the energy transition, whereas the total renewable share has always been high in countries with large hydro plants.

Important: The World Bank keeps solar and wind together with biomass and geothermal; separately they are available as Ember series. The total renewable share is available as a ready-made series, Renewables share of electricity. Aggregates are weighted by generation, from 2000 onward.
