About the indicator

The rise in consumer prices over a year measured from December to December. It differs from average annual inflation in the way it is computed: the average compares the mean price levels of two years and therefore lags, while December on December catches the current state. When inflation accelerates this indicator runs above the average one, when it slows it runs below, and at the height of a price surge the divergence reaches tens of percentage points.

Important: This is the quantity usually meant by inflation over the year. The IMF series runs with a forecast several years ahead.
