About the indicator

Gross national income in current dollars: everything produced inside the country, plus the income its residents receive from abroad, minus the income non-residents receive inside it. This adjustment is exactly what separates GNI from GDP, and in most countries the difference is small, though not everywhere: in Ireland GNI is markedly below GDP because of the profits of foreign corporations, while in countries with large labor migration it is higher, on account of remittances and earnings abroad. It is by GNI per capita that the World Bank divides countries into income groups.

Important: The divergence from GDP is worth looking at as a pair: the difference itself is the net income from abroad.
