About the indicator

Gross national income in international dollars at purchasing power parity. Conversion at PPP changes the picture more than one might expect: for countries with low domestic prices income in international dollars comes out two or three times higher than at the market exchange rate, because the same sum buys more there. That is exactly why world rankings by nominal and by PPP income look different.

Important: International dollars, not current ones: they cannot be added to nominal GNI. PPP estimates rest on the rounds of the International Comparison Program, which are held once every few years, so they are revised after the fact.
