About the indicator

The annual growth of gross domestic product per person in constant prices. It differs from ordinary GDP growth by the rate of population growth, and in countries with fast-growing populations the difference runs to two or three percentage points a year — enough for brisk economic growth to mean stagnant income per person. It is this indicator, not GDP growth, that matches the everyday question of whether life has become better.

Important: It can be negative while GDP growth is positive — in that case the population is growing faster than the economy.
