About the indicator

The estimated number of deaths from tuberculosis during a year among people without HIV. Excluding the HIV-positive here is methodological rather than arbitrary: under the international classification the death of a person with HIV is attributed to HIV regardless of which infection was the immediate cause, so those deaths are counted in the indicator of HIV-related deaths. Adding the two series does make sense — together they are exactly what gives the full number of deaths from tuberculosis.

Important: People without HIV only. The full number of deaths from tuberculosis is the sum with the HIV-associated part, which is counted in the indicator of HIV deaths.
