About the indicator

The number of new HIV infections during a year per 1,000 uninfected people aged 15–49. The denominator here is precisely the uninfected: only they can be infected, and as prevalence rises this denominator shrinks. The indicator answers the question of the current speed of spread, whereas prevalence and the number of people living with HIV reflect the accumulated result of past years.

Important: Incidence and prevalence move in different directions: treatment prolongs the lives of people living with HIV, so the number of people living with HIV can grow while the number of new infections falls.
