About the indicator

The estimated number of deaths from malaria during a year. The series is kept only for countries where malaria is transmitted: in the rest it does not occur, and that is not a gap in the data but the absence of the phenomenon. The bulk of the deaths are children under five in Africa south of the Sahara, which makes malaria one of the few infections where the age structure of mortality is skewed so far.

Important: The table holds only countries where malaria is transmitted — about 110 territories. For the rest the value is missing, and this should be read as “practically zero” rather than “unknown”.
