The estimated number of deaths during a year from causes related to HIV. The wording “related” is not accidental: the virus itself destroys immunity, while the immediate cause of death is usually another infection, most often tuberculosis. This series shows the effect of the arrival of affordable antiretroviral therapy — since the mid-2000s mortality has been falling while the number of people living with HIV keeps growing.
Important: A UNAIDS estimate with an uncertainty interval; the central estimate is taken. Part of these deaths are at the same time counted as tuberculosis deaths in statistics where HIV status is not separated out.
