About the indicator

Life expectancy at birth for men. Men live shorter lives than women in practically every country in the world, and this is one of the most stable differences in all of demography — but the size of the gap varies severalfold: from two or three years in South Asia to ten and more in Eastern Europe, where excess male mortality at working ages is especially large.

Important: The aggregate for country groups is weighted by the male population rather than by the whole population: the share of men across countries ranges from 48 to 70 percent, and in countries with heavy labor migration the difference is substantial.
