About the indicator

The share of women in total population. Slightly more boys than girls are born (about 105 to 100), but because male mortality is higher the ratio evens out at older ages and then tilts toward women. Deviations from 50% in either direction point either to labor migration (the male surplus in the Gulf states) or to a gap in life expectancy.
