The number of births per thousand women aged 15–19 during a year. The indicator is closely tied to the education of girls, the availability of contraception and the age at marriage, which is why it is used as a summary measure of the position of adolescent girls. Early childbirth is dangerous medically — maternal mortality is higher in this age group — and socially: it usually means interrupted schooling.
Important: The aggregate is weighted by the female population as a whole rather than by the 15–19 age group: the catalog has no separate series for the size of that group, and its share among women differs about twofold across countries.
