The number of people killed directly in the course of fighting on the territory of a country during a calendar year. Both combatants and civilians killed as a result of fighting are counted. Estimates of the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, published through the World Bank database.
Important: Indirect deaths — from famine, destroyed health care, epidemics — are not included, although in protracted wars they exceed battle deaths. The absence of a country means the absence of conflict, not the absence of data.
