About the indicator

The share of agricultural land equipped for irrigation in the total area of agricultural land. Irrigation sharply raises yields and reduces dependence on the weather, but it also accounts for the bulk of freshwater withdrawal worldwide — from 60 to 90% in countries with a dry climate.

Important: The aggregate is weighted by the area of agricultural land: the share of irrigated land is calculated against it, not against all land.
